These are a few programs that are reaching for the same basic goal as Second Life.  They are not as massively multi-user which can be viewed as an upside or a downside.

 

  • Open Croquet is a powerful open source software development environment for the creation and large-scale distributed deployment of multi-user virtual 3D applications and metaverses that are (1) persistent (2) deeply collaborative, (3) interconnected and (4) interoperable. The Croquet architecture supports synchronous communication, collaboration, resource sharing and computation among large numbers of users on multiple platforms and multiple devices.
  • X3d: The Web3D Consortium was formed to provide a forum for the creation of open standards for Web3D specifications, and to accelerate the worldwide demand for products based on these standards through the sponsorship of market and user education programs.
  • Flux Project: Flux Playerâ„¢ 2.1 lets you see the Web in 3D and play with virtual scenes, worlds, avatars, gadgets and games in a standard browser. Flux Player 2.1 is a small (1.5MB), free 3D player plugin for MS Windows Internet Explorer and Firefox Web browsers. No spyware, adware, or other junk.
