Virtual Web Quest about Learning Spaces
Objective: Develop some ideas about constitutes an excellent virtual learning space in 3D immersive environments
What should virtual learning spaces look like? Will they be just be a replica of what exists in 2007 in real life, or will they be much more creative and informal?
Work as a team to identify what makes a good virtual world learning space and why. Be prepared with some remarks for the next workshop session.
Set up a team meeting to visit learning spaces on Second Life.
Make sure you identify a ‘meeting chairperson’ and a scribe to take notes so that you can refer to them later. To save the chat history, click Edit --> Preferences --> Communication --> click Log Chat and choose a location on your computer for the text file.
Visit a number of learning spaces in Second Life using the Resources section below as a starting point, and look at how they have been set up. What are the key features of each learning space you visited? – and how will you know if they are successful learning spaces that help learners to learn?

[9:49] Ida Recreant: Dunora, children take to this so easily. My daughter's 25, and I asked her to tell me if she'd like to use this for a class sometime. She thought it was so interesting, and surpassed me in visiting places and talking to people.

[10:04] Dunora Allen: Honestly, I do a lot of group work in my online classes, and I'm looking for a way to help my students form more realistic communities.
[10:04] Drew Rodinia: Julia, are they in certain disciplines? Certain courses?
[10:04] Kate Bradley: to find the best use of this environment for teaching
[10:05] Drew Rodinia: Dunora, interesting! What do you find lacking in your existing online classes?
[10:05] Drew Rodinia: Kate, what types of teaching are you trying to accomplish?
[10:05] Computer Jewell: possibly use SL as a delivery system for some content in our online classes.
[10:05] Ida Recreant: Drew, for example, I'm teaching a sports marketing law class in the fall and I'd like students to be able to negotiate an indorsement contract to represent a company and to look at the implications of such a contract to the community, the company, the athlete, etc.
[10:05] JuliaJ Jewell: I chair the undergrad program, so would be interested in all. But, I teach behavioral courses, so thought that the online component might be something useful for community, conflict resolution, group dynamics... I'm not sure, but assume there's alot here for me to learn and apply ;,)
[10:05] Ariadne Yiyuan: I'd like to see more intra-curriculum building. SL incorporates so many disciplines, it would be nice to develop a class that would extend throughout the college.
[10:05] Drew Rodinia: Diane, what tools are you already using for that?

[10:05] Dunora Allen: The students HAVE to form groups, but I've noticed in my f2f classes the groups tend to communicate better and be more invested in the group's project. I'd like to find a way to replicate that experience for my fully online students.

[10:08] Ida Recreant: I use blackboard's discussion forum and some occasional online virtual chat
[10:08] Ilene Pratt: Kate, you are right about Blackboard - It's a great place to save files and trade messages - but it seems sort of flat!
[10:08] Ariadne Yiyuan: We are using WebCT. I find it to be a confining box. This gives me much more creative freedom.

[10:12] Ariadne Yiyuan: Risk taking. I've done things in SL I would never do in RL. I think the quiet students would be more inclined to interact.

[10:12] Nea Munro: I think it would have a number of families who lived together in a community who could be virtual patients for the nurse practitioner student's clinical practice - a virtual clinical practice site.

[10:12] Dunora Allen: Although one problem that I've found is the initial learning curve is a little steep for us older students :)

[10:13] Ida Recreant: Of course, in a legal system--but more similar to RL
[10:13] Dunora Allen: The role playing aspect is interesting to me - modeling job interviews, etec.
[10:13] Nea Munro: Yes, role playing where faculty may model psychotherapy by having a student as a patient, and also by having students participate as "patients' of other students for the purpose of learning psychotherapy.
[10:13] Computer Jewell: What about the students who do not have the computing demands of SL?
[10:13] Drew Rodinia: Ida, role playing in a legal environment? Is the environment physical, or is it more about the roles?
[10:13] Diane42b Vollmar: One thing that has concerned me about using SL for instruction is the technology learning curve, particularly for older students.
[10:13] Ariadne Yiyuan: I've just gone up to complete strangers and talked to them. I have no idea who these people are. The first time I was shot, I was devastated. But Iearned I could live through anything in SL.
[10:14] Drew Rodinia: Ariadne, so it's easier to communicate with strangers here, then?
[10:14] Joe Cupola: the ability to do roleplaying is one of the strengths 2L has to offer

[10:14] Dunora Allen: For me, it was easier to communicate with strangers when I couldn't see them.

[10:34] Nea Munro: I envision each university might want to contribute a "family" who could live in the community. The members of the family could be the basis for undergraduate courses, where the students follow the dynamics and life. Different cultures could be represented.
[10:34] Dunora Allen: We have some grant money available next year through our SACS reaccreditation project (that I'm a part of) for that type of thing, so we would definitely be interested.

[10:48] Dunora Allen: Exactly - blackboard (and our Webct) is an official university product, and has the aministration's support, but second life does not, yet.
[10:48] Kate Bradley: this is an important issue for us and SL will probably not be used by faculry unless we can solve this somehow
[10:48] Drew Rodinia: for instance, I used to teach in a department where several of the faculty depended heavily on others to put things into their Bb courses
[10:48] Laureen Yiyuan: I'm embedded in two areas, ed admin and ed psych they don't take well to BB
[10:49] Drew Rodinia: Dunora, so my question becomes...how did Bb get the admin support? It didn't happen all at once, right?
[10:49] Nea Munro: I presented my idea for a community of practice in SL at a recent Nursing in COmputing conference (Rutgers) and generated a lot of interest. I am now putting together a mailing list for those interested in learning more about this, or participating. If you want to be included, let me know.
